His father Shertsong Pasang Tsering was a prominent official businessman in Lhasa who was commissioned by the Tibetan Government and had travelled extensively in India, Nepal, China and Mongol. Thonden is the grandson of Sherpa Gyalpo Khangsar, one of the richest and the most prolific Tibetan businessmen in Lhasa in early 1920s, he had a very close business ties with the Royal family of Nepal.

In 1949 his family hired an officer from the Nepalese Embassy in Lhasa, Darma Bhabu, to teach him Basic English, Math and Nepali. His cousin sister Kalsang Yangki Talka (former Tibetan Education Minister and Ambassador to England) also taught him English. He also studied English under a retired British officer Major Ken.

Dakyap Ladang was north of Lhasa in Penpo region of Tibet. There he studied under the tutelage of Dakyap Rinpoche (Nawang Losang Yeshi) who was the direct linage of Dakyap Tulku a part of Sera Mey Monstery.

Later Thonden attended non-monastic Sera University to study Tibetan Buddhist Philosophy, Language and Calligraphy under Geshe Lama Tenzin Gyalsten.
